What documents do I need to lease a vehicle?

Sorting the paperwork for a car or van lease with DriveOn is quick. Here's exactly what to have ready before you apply — no payslips, no jargon, no surprises.

Enquiring won't affect your credit score.

All credit considered No payslips demanded Quick to sort

To lease a car or van with DriveOn you need four things: a valid UK driving licence, proof of your current address, recent bank statements, and fully comprehensive insurance in place before you drive away. We don't demand payslips the way finance does, all credit is considered, and enquiring doesn't affect your credit score.

DriveOn owns the vehicles and runs the hire ourselves, so you deal with us directly and our checks are our own — lighter and more human than a finance application. Because this is short-term hire on fixed 6–24 month terms, not a credit product, the paperwork is refreshingly simple. Here's the full checklist.

Your document checklist

  • A valid UK driving licence The name and address on it should be current. This is the first thing we check.
  • Proof of your current address A recent utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement, usually dated within the last three months.
  • Recent bank statements These show the monthly payment is comfortably affordable for you — no payslips needed.
  • Fully comprehensive insurance In place on the vehicle before you drive it away. We give you the details you need to arrange it.

What do you need to lease a car or van?

The four items above cover it for most people. A valid UK driving licence proves you can drive the vehicle legally. Proof of address confirms where you live. Recent bank statements let us see the monthly payment is comfortable for you. And fully comprehensive insurance keeps you and the vehicle covered from the moment you drive away. That's genuinely it — pick the car or van you want, get those ready, and you're most of the way there. If you're weighing it all up first, our guide on how leasing works walks through the arrangement step by step.

Do I need payslips?

No. This trips a lot of people up, because car finance often insists on payslips and a stack of proof. We don't work that way. DriveOn is a hire company, so instead of payslips we simply look at recent bank statements to check the payment is affordable. That's a relief if your pay is irregular, if you're paid in cash, or if you just don't have neat monthly slips to hand. It's one of the reasons hire suits people that finance turns away.

What if I'm self-employed?

You're well catered for. Self-employed customers show us recent bank statements rather than payslips, which fits how most sole traders and contractors actually get paid. We're used to varied income and we look at the wider picture, not one payslip on one day. If that's you, our dedicated page on self-employed car and van hire goes into more detail on what to expect.

What if I'm a new business?

A young company with a short trading history can find finance doors closed. Hiring is a different story. We can usually work from the director's own details and recent business or personal bank statements, so you don't need years of filed accounts to put a van on the road. If you've just started out, take a look at our new business vehicle leasing page, or if credit history is the worry, our bad credit car and van hire page explains how we consider every application.

Do I need insurance before delivery?

Yes. You must have fully comprehensive insurance in place on the vehicle before you drive it away, whether you're collecting from us or having it delivered. This is your own policy, arranged in your name. We give you the vehicle details you need to set it up, so you can get a quote and have cover ready in good time. If you're not sure where to start, just ask — we'll point you in the right direction.

What happens after I apply?

Once you've applied, we come back to you to confirm the vehicle, talk through the monthly cost and check the documents. There's no obligation and nothing touches your credit file until you decide to go ahead. When everything's in order, we arrange collection or nationwide delivery (£1.50 per mile exc VAT from Shrewsbury) — and you drive away. Ready when you are: start your application, or send us an enquiry if you'd like a chat first.
